GUIDE · MAC DICTATION

Mac dictation not working: a 7-step checklist.

Dictation that never starts, starts but types nothing, or quits mid-sentence are three different problems. Go from the simple checks to the harder ones; every step maps to something you can see in System Settings.

Short answer:Usually Dictation is off in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation, the shortcut is not the key you think, the wrong microphone is selected, or Voice Control is on. Work through the seven checks below from easy to hard; if it still does not fit your workflow, a hold-to-talk tool such as VoiceInput (free plan available) is the alternative.

Which kind of "not working" is it?

  • Nothing happens when you press the shortcut: dictation is off, or the shortcut is not the key you think it is. See steps 1 and 2.
  • It starts, but no text appears: wrong microphone, Voice Control is on, or the language is unsupported. See steps 3 to 6.
  • It stops by itself while you talk: usually a pause longer than 30 seconds. See step 7.

The seven checks

STEP 1 · Turn dictation on

Apple menu, then System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. Switch it on and click Enable when asked.

STEP 2 · Check the shortcut

The Shortcut pop-up on the same page lists the built-in options and lets you create your own. If your keyboard has a Microphone key, it starts dictation too. To stop, press Esc, the Microphone key, or the dictation shortcut again.

STEP 3 · Microphone source

The Microphone source menu defaults to Automatic. With Bluetooth headphones, an external mic or a monitor with a built-in mic, Automatic can pick the wrong device. Choose the one you are speaking into. Then open System Settings → Sound → Input and talk: if the input level bar does not move, the problem is the device or system input, not dictation.

STEP 4 · Turn Voice Control off

Apple documents that standard dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on. Look under System Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control, and switch it off if you do not need it.

STEP 5 · Dictation language

Dictation is not available in every language or region. Under Languages in the dictation settings, click Edit and confirm your language is on the list. When you mix languages, click the language indicator next to the cursor or press the Globe key to switch.

STEP 6 · On your Mac, or on Apple's servers?

Keyboard settings show whether dictation for a language is processed on your Mac or sent to Siri servers. If it says servers, you will get no text when the network is down or flaky. Retry with a stable connection, or use a language that is processed on the Mac.

STEP 7 · Keep pauses under 30 seconds

There is no cap on how long you can dictate, but dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without detected speech. If you stop to think, it may end the session; just start it again.

It only fails in one app

Try the built-in Notes app first. If dictation works there but not in another app, the problem is that app's text field, not dictation. Dictate into Notes and paste, or try another input location.

If it still does not fit your workflow

Apple Dictation is press-to-start, press-again-to-stop. If you prefer hold-to-talk, VoiceInput uses Right Option by default: hold, speak, release, and the text lands at the cursor. The free plan works for this. It needs the same kind of system permissions (Microphone, Input Monitoring, Accessibility), so a missing permission also looks like "nothing happens"; see Permissions. To change the key, read how to change the dictation shortcut.

FAQ

Does Mac dictation have a time limit?

Apple's Mac User Guide says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout. Dictation does stop on its own when no speech is detected for 30 seconds, so a session that "ends mid-thought" is usually a long pause, not a length cap.

Mac dictation shortcut does nothing. What should I check first?

Open System Settings, then Keyboard, then Dictation. Make sure dictation is on and the Shortcut menu shows the key you are actually pressing. Also check whether Voice Control is on, because standard dictation is unavailable while it is.

Is there a way to dictate on a Mac without Apple Dictation?

Yes. A third-party hold-to-talk app such as VoiceInput works like this: hold Right Option, speak, release, and the text lands at the cursor. It needs three macOS permissions (Microphone, Input Monitoring, Accessibility); if one is missing it will also appear to do nothing.
